DIY recirculating skimmer

Hi Folks,

Just to share to you guys my DIY skimmer. I'm still saving money for a good skimmer so while I don't have the budget, I decided to try DIY since may mga spare naman ako from the previous unsuccessful setup.

Puro LFS lang and pinagkukunan ko ng idea non eh so napa turbo skimmer tuloy ako.

The niddle-wheel:

From sq2200 propeller + carti bio balls (natutunan ko na, NO to bioballs if you don't have a way to support nitrate! So gamitin, at pag expermentuhan). It took me 7 bioballs to get it right.



DIY Venturi valve:

Reducer 1" X 3/4"
ordinary air hose



The recirculating pump with needle-wheel:



Trial:

I have two sq2200 and installed the DIY venturi valve. I tried both with and without needle-wheel. The one with needle-wheel has a more consistent small bubbles and less turbulence compared to the pump with ordinary propeller.

On the reaction Chamber

This is from the KANYON last December. Di na rin pumuputok so pinutol ko nalang. I haven't installed the water intake and tubing for the water to escape the chamber yet.

The height of the surface of the water with pump ON is almost consistent. It's a sign that it might work.


Competed and installed:

Temporary installation around 9:30PM... just a pilot testing...


After I came back from work 9 AM (nightshifter ), I saw this --


This is a 10hr worth of skimming-

with yellow morning sun light panget ng cam ng cell ko.

I don't expect that this is going to be successful. I rate success in this time in terms of that, this project gave me an idea on what is going to look like if I'll do it again. This time -

- With reliable pump designed for skimmers and external use. Do you know if RIO RVT is needle-wheel?
-Wider chamber diameter
-Longer one
-Sana may acrylic clear tube!

I'm not expecting the sq2200 will last. But, until now, 2 days na sya tumatakbo. Mainit sya pero not to the point na di ko sya mahawakan.

I'll let you guys know pag sumabog na sya!

btw i do have an extra pump we use for the reef octo skimmers, it's already needlewheel, 18 watts lang. suited for external installation, and it has union grooves for easy connection.

for the seaquest kasi, the problems you might encounter would be overheating and proper sealing...it's o ring isn't designed for external applications, just for proper fitting.

Thanks for the tip guys. Its still working kaso sobrang konti ng skimmate kasi wala naman akong livestock... just finished recycling ang still working out lowering nitrate.



Balak ko i-unplug muna while no livestock.

Yung RIO may RVT version sila eh. Ito yung venturi version that is actually just an ordinary RIO na may kasamang venturi valve. Di ko lang sure kung propeller nito is needle-wheel.

Si Mike sa DA may mga needle-wheel as per PM kaso di pa nagrereply sa price. Sana practical yung price.

bilhin mo nalang yung kay vin pogi (may discount daw pag pinakilala mo sya sa kapitbahay nyong maganda.) hehe j/k

re on rio, pwede mong gawing mesh style yung impeller kung hindi needle wheel. may mga thread sa RC tungkol dun, check mo nalang. Maganda at very consistent ang output nya.

Nice to see its working, a venturi would be an improvement.

Where could we get one he he?
